Welcome to Week 8 Term 1

Welcome to Week 8 of a very unique first term 2022. We hope all those families affected by covid-19 are holding up well and the children and caregivers who have contracted it recover quickly. We are all praying for you in class. Children are now returning to school from isolation mostly reporting only mild symptoms. We are one of the least affected schools in Rotorua, last week our roll was still at 75% with only a couple of teachers affected. Many schools in Rotorua have temporarily closed.  We continue to follow strict Omicron protocols at school to ensure that we have as little spread as is possible, including:

  • Good ventilation in classrooms and any place that children and staff are 

  • Sanitising when we enter school and buildings

  • Cleaning surfaces in classrooms during the day

  • Social distancing where practicable


Mrs Dobson and Mrs Mines are busy in their role as DRSs. Thanks to them for organising the Bread and Water Morning Tea last week when the children were asked to think of those around the world who only have bread and water to eat every day, and also for the St Joseph’s Liturgy. This week on Friday we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. The liturgies will be run in classrooms.

Coming up this week: 

  • No swimming this week for Middle School, Kahikatea.
  • Wednesday - Library. 
  • Friday - Feast of the Annunciation Liturgy in classes.
  • Roller Skating at lunchtime on Friday

Kia ora! A big welcome back to all families to the 2022 school year at St Mary's Rotorua. We trust that all parents, caregivers and children were able to have an enjoyable summer break and profit from the warm fine days we experienced. We hope that children are refreshed and ready for a great year of learning in Year 3. It was great to meet so many families last week at the Meet the Teacher sessions on Thursday and Friday. As we explained, Year 3 classes will be operating a bit differently from past years at St Mary's. We will be running a play-based learning programme in the mornings and Year 3 children will no longer be using their own Chromebooks in class. The three Year 3 classes of Room 15 (Miss Bowie) Room 16 (Mr Bach) and Room 17 (Mrs Tiedt) will be collaborating during play-based learning and in the teaching of reading and maths groups. Welcome to Week 7 Term 2

Good morning on this wonderful, wet Sunday morning.  I hope you are all managing to stay warm and dry.  We had a very rewarding week of testing reading, writing and maths last week.  The children have worked hard this year so far and it can certainly be seen in the gains that they have made. Once again, St Mary's provides our children with many opportunities to participate in a variety of sports and activities.   Young Vinnies have the finals of the Talent Quest tomorrow at 9.15 am in the hall.  Congratulations to those who are in the finals.  Remember to be prepared and bring any props, clothes etc which you may need.  The rest of the school look forward to watching and seeing the talent in our school. The Ripper Rugby Tournament is scheduled for this Wednesday, with Friday as the postponement day. Viewing the Icon - Holy Mary, Mother of God

Today we were lucky enough to visit a beautiful piece of artwork showing  Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua Wahine o te Atua - Holy Mary, Mother of God. It was created by Dunedin artist, Damian Walker, who has integrated aspects of the Māori culture into his work. For example, Mary is holding 12 fern fronds and each koru represents an apostle. She is wearing a tiki around her neck which symbolises her motherhood. Baby Jesus is wearing a kahu kiwi (Kiwi feathered cloak) which was only ever worn by Māori chiefs or people with prestigious mana. The children were blown away by the stunning details within the painting and how they all had a special meaning. Father Thomas was able to answer many questions about the art before leading us in singing Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.
