Welcome to Week 4 Term 1

Welcome to week 4, we hope you have had a lovely weekend thus far. The year 3's have settled really well into school and have adjusted to classroom routines beautifully. Last week we introduced guided reading into our morning programme and this week guided maths groups will take place as well. As posted last week, Maths Whizz is able to be used at home. Sunshine Classics will also be up and running this week. 

Last week, the children completed their own statistical investigation. When learning about tally marks, we used the different coloured cars on Ranolf Street to collect data. 

On Friday, your children were sent home with their Pepeha and the following notice: 
Kia ora whānau, The children in Room 15 are writing their pepeha and need a bit more information. With so many wonderful cultures in our school, I am unfamiliar with the landmarks in some countries. If you could help your child find out what the closest maunga (mountain) and awa (river) OR roto (lake) OR moana (sea) is to your home city or town, that would be fantastic! Please return these sheets with your child on Monday.

Below is a flowchart that will also be included in the newsletter. It explains what to do in the event of someone in your home being a close contact or getting Covid.

Mass

Mass has been organised for this Friday on the school field at 9.00am (tbc). Details will follow. Ash Wednesday Liturgies will need to happen in year teams this year. Details will follow shortly.


Swimming Sports 2022

We will be holding our annual Swimming Sports 2022 on Thursday 10th March. This year only Year 4-6 students will be attending. Please click on the link below to ensure we have the correct details for all our students. Swimming Sports Form

Viewing the Icon - Holy Mary, Mother of God

Today we were lucky enough to visit a beautiful piece of artwork showing  Ko Hāta Maria, te Matua Wahine o te Atua - Holy Mary, Mother of God. It was created by Dunedin artist, Damian Walker, who has integrated aspects of the Māori culture into his work. For example, Mary is holding 12 fern fronds and each koru represents an apostle. She is wearing a tiki around her neck which symbolises her motherhood. Baby Jesus is wearing a kahu kiwi (Kiwi feathered cloak) which was only ever worn by Māori chiefs or people with prestigious mana. The children were blown away by the stunning details within the painting and how they all had a special meaning. Father Thomas was able to answer many questions about the art before leading us in singing Ave, Ave, Ave Maria.

    End of year FUN DAY To our wonderful whanau, Next Monday the 5th of December, the Year 0, 1, 2, 3’s will be having an end of year fun day at school. We will be having some fun outdoor activities, some water play, and Christmas crafts. We will also be having an organised lunch together. Outdoor Activities We will have a camp-like setting for these.  Activities include hut making, campfire, roasting marshmallows, burma trail. Water Play Pool and slip and slide Lunch Rooms 15, 16 and 17  will be sharing their lunch together.  We will have hot chips and hotdogs,  ice blocks, and treats for the christmas crafts.  Please bring $5 each. What to bring Children can come to school in mufti on this day. Swimming gear - togs and towels. School sun hat. Water bottle. A small morning tea to eat. Money for our lunch. The only food children will need to bring that day is their usual morning tea. The teachers will collect the money and organise the food. Thank you for bringing in your money ON or B

Welcome to Week 7 Term 2

Good morning on this wonderful, wet Sunday morning.  I hope you are all managing to stay warm and dry.  We had a very rewarding week of testing reading, writing and maths last week.  The children have worked hard this year so far and it can certainly be seen in the gains that they have made. Once again, St Mary's provides our children with many opportunities to participate in a variety of sports and activities.   Young Vinnies have the finals of the Talent Quest tomorrow at 9.15 am in the hall.  Congratulations to those who are in the finals.  Remember to be prepared and bring any props, clothes etc which you may need.  The rest of the school look forward to watching and seeing the talent in our school. The Ripper Rugby Tournament is scheduled for this Wednesday, with Friday as the postponement day. This event has been postponed twice already so let’s hope that it happens this time.  The interschool Cross Country is scheduled for Tuesday, with Thursday being the postponement day. R
